A Humble Epic Volume VIII
This year Photography III AP students at River Hill High School embarked on what contemporary photographic storyteller and photo book soothsayer Alec Soth refers to as a “Humble Epic,” small scale publications of large scale ideas. The year began with proposals and ideas presented to the class with successive shooting explorations using a variety of mediums and approaches. With a compressed timeline and only ever meeting and working together virtually we are here all together in this book physically for the first time.

Voyages
For their first project students explored the idea of place. They created a photo essay telling the story of a place – this could have been a place that was familiar and everyday or it could have been some place newly discovered. Students explored examples, brainstormed and planned their own photo essay, then went out and documented that place to compose a final presentation of images.

Imagined Stories
To begin their yearlong narrative journey in Photo 3, students started with some small ideas to build them into something epic. Students generated lists of small imaginary stories. For example, they might have began with a place and developed an imagined story around that place – maybe a person was the main character and that is where they started, perhaps an object, a memory, a dream, a fantasy, a nightmare. . .
Here are some of their photographic responses to those imaginary stories.
